Sometimes you need root level access. Like for example, say you need to set permissions to some files that your current main user does not have access to. Root can do this.

Use root sparingly, it can be dangerous.

nicksmacbook:~ nyeates$ sudo su root
sh-3.2# passwd

Retype new password:
